mm-Wave Rectennas with Diode-on-Antenna Topology and Antenna-on-Chip Structure

The standards organization of mobile telecommunications of 5G/6G has discussed not only high-speed, low-latency communication technology but also wireless power transmission technology from base stations to IoT terminals. To efficiently receive radio waves from base stations over a wide area, it is important to improve the rectification efficiency and sensitivity of mm-wave band rectennas, which consist of a receiving antenna and rectifier circuit. In this workshop, we present mm-wave rectenna topologies that are diode-on-antenna (DoA) topologies and antenna-on-chip (AoC) structures for highly efficient and highly sensitive rectification. First, the DoA topology with a high-impedance dipole antenna including all of RF circuit functionalities is discussed for highly efficient rectification. The rectifier diodes are directly connected to the antenna without lossy circuit components. Second, the AoC structure with the EM coupling structure for an external wire antenna is discussed to eliminate the chip’s internal loss, which is more severe in the mm-wave band.
