Development of Co-Packaged Optics Technology for Photonics Applications
Co-packaged optics (CPO) is a new class of microelectronics that addresses the ever-increasing demand for high-speed, high-throughput communications for a variety of applications. Through the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense (OUSD) sponsored KANAGAWA program, together with the SHIP-RF program, Qorvo and its partners have established the basis of a compelling CPO technology to serve USG needs. This paper outlines Qorvo’s approach to development of heterogeneously integrated CPO modules, early empirical results as well as some key challenges associated with reliable manufacturability of complex CPO modules.
