Passive Sensing Transponders for IoT Applications

Wireless sensors are the backbone of IoT and AI solutions, since they can provide information even from remote areas. This information is elaborated, and it is used to make decisions and take correct actions. The bottleneck to the intensive use of these devices is the battery. Battery-powered IoT devices can be cumbersome and expensive, and must be placed in accessible areas where the battery can be replaced or recharged regularly. On the other hand, passive wireless sensors, based on backscatter communication, usually suffer from limited read range, due to the limited sensitivity of the passive transponders. In this talk, emerging sensing approaches will be presented, aimed at extending the range of passive sensors. Different sensor types will be illustrated and demonstrated in real operating conditions, and significant operating scenarios will be shown.
