Architecture, Design and Deployment Challenges of E-Band and D-Band Communication Systems

This tutorial discusses the proliferation of mm-wave communication systems with particular focus on E-band and D-band systems. Although near-THz device demonstrations appear to be commonplace, mass deployment of practical end-to-end products is a far greater challenge. Such systems benefit not only from RFIC innovations, but also from packaging, material engineering and co-design of various elements to produce scalable and manufacturable products. Additionally, this tutorial will also discuss the techniques and pitfalls of near-THz system characterization, which, unfortunately, are rarely discussed among RFIC designers, particularly where existing instrumentation struggles to meet the needs.
